Designᴵᵀ-TO-LEAD will be held in city of Kragujevac, the largest city of the District of Šumadija and the fourth largest city in the Republic of Serbia. Numerous archeological sites from prehistoric, antic and medieval period are testimonies of settlement’s long history. The first written records of medieval square Kragujevac are found in Turkish document, Tapu-Defter, dated in 1476. The city is most probably named after Kraguj, the believed owner of the estate on which the settlement was built. But according to another myth the name came from a bird of prey called kraguj.
After the final fall of the Serbian Medieval State (1389) the region shared the fate of the whole nation under the Turkish, and in the short period of time under the Austrian rule. Kragujevac was the capital of the modern Serbian State from 1818 until 1841, the time is considered to be the golden age of the city. During the 19th century many first state institutions, judicial, educational, cultural, industrial and apothecary, were established here (Court, National Office, Grammar and High School Lycee, Serbian Majestic Orchestra, Court Theatre, Cannon Foundry, Electrical Power Plant, Pharmacy). At that time the foundations of the modern city life were laid.
In the 20 th century the city experienced fierce devastation and casualties during the World War I and II, but demographical and industrial boost followed. As a remainder to the World War II a memorial park Šumarice is built.
Today Kragujevac is best known for its car and army industry and University of Kragujevac. Faculty of Science, and as a host to Designᴵᵀ-TO-LEAD.
In the early sixties of the last century, Kragujevac welcomed the establishment of the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering as departments of the University of Belgrade. Two additional departments – the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Science – were established in 1972.
Help and support came from the state, the city of Kragujevac and professors from the University of Belgrade and other universities. They conducted the classes in the early years of the Faculty of Science, and contributed that the Faculty has rapidly evolved and became independent in 1976. In the same year, 138 years after the establishment of the Lyceum, the then University ‘Svetozar Marković’ and today the University of Kragujevac was founded. The state of Serbia and its Ministry of Education and Science provide great support and assistance to the development of the Faculty of Science and the entire University. Arriving at Kragujevac
By Plane
There is no commercial airport in Kragujevac. The closest are located in Belgrade, Airport Nikola Tesla Belgrade, http://www.beg.aero/home (150 km to the North), and Niš, Nis Constantine the Grear Airport http://nis-airport.com/ (150 km to the South). From Belgrade Airport to City Center and Bus station there are three ways of public transport: Shutlle Bus A1, Bus Line 72, Bus Line 607. Belgrade Taxi may also be used at the Airport for direct drive to the Bus station.
Alternative way of direct transport is to call Kragujevac Pink Taxi by Android or OS App (for more info please visit http://www.pinktaxi.rs/pink-aplikacije/). The average cost is between 60 and 70 EUR.
By Bus
This is the most recommendable option when visiting Kragujevac. The drive from Belgrade lasts 2 hours and tickets can be purchased at Belgrade’s bus station for about 10 euros round trip. The bus from Niš is slower because it stops at Jagodina and several other smaller towns. Center of the city is easily reachable from the central bus station in 10 minutes.
